Canada issued the Impact Assessment Act which replaced the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, 2012. The Act provides for a process to assess the environmental, health, social, and economic effects of designated projects with a view to preventing certain adverse effects and fostering sustainability.

​The federal Impact Assessment Act and the Canadian Energy Regulator Act came into force on August 28, 2019, concurrent with the repeal of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, 2012 and the National Energy Board Act. Certain related regulations also came into effect on August 28, 2019, including the Physical Activities Regulations (the new Project List) and the Information and Management of Time Limits Regulations, both under the Impact Assessment Act.

In response to the June 10, 2019 chlorine gas leak in Tianjin and the chemical explosion in Henan Province, the Tianjin Emergency Management Bureau is advocating for better hazardous chemicals safety work. Officials will begin a series of inspections at hazardous chemicals entities and they reiterated that workers who are ill should be kept away from hazardous chemical operations duties.
