The Ministry of the Environment of Peru (MINAM) and the Presidency of the Council of Ministers (PCM) have issued a legislative decree that approves the Law of Integral Management of Solid Wastes. On December 23, 2016, the standard was approved and published in the National System for Environmental Information. The legislative decree establishes rights, obligations, powers and responsibilities of society with the goal of maximization of efficiency in the use of materials. The decree aims to ensure the economic and sanitary management of solid waste. To achieve the goals, the decree emphasizes the importance of life-cycle management of waste and prioritizes waste recovery, reuse, recycling, composting, and coprocessing, among other alternatives that guarantee the protection of health and the environment.
