On May 22, 2017, Senator Emmanuel Joel Villanueva went before the Senate of the Philippines and sponsored the plenary Senate Bill (SB) No. 1317 or the proposed Occupational Safety and Health Standard Act (the Act). The goal of the Act is to ensure humane work conditions and has already been approved by the House of Representatives.
This legislative effort follows data from the Department of Labor and Employment, which indicated that there were 199 fatal, and 232 non-fatal, workplace accidents from January 2014 to October 2016. In addition, the country has seen higher numbers of occupational diseases and chronic illnesses facing the nation’s workers.
